The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the New South Wales Government. Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
Construction of a new Wyangala water treatment plant to deliver cleaner, safer drinking water for residents of Wyangala village and the popular Wyangala Dam holiday park.
The treatment plant will deliver up to 800 megalitres of clean drinking water every day.
This was priority infrastructure as the current infrastructure was no longer fit for purpose and unable to supply residents with water that meets the Australian Drinking Water Standards.
Work started in early 2022 and was completed in late 2023, with the treatment plant commissioned in April 2024.
Wyangala Dam Wall Raising
The Australian Government is committed to responsible investment in water infrastructure. This is based on scientific evidence and business cases that stack up economically and environmentally.
Following the completion of the detailed business case, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments, the decision was made to not proceed with the construction of the Wyangala Dam wall raising project.
The detailed business case and an Infrastructure New South Wales review showed that the costs would be considerably higher than originally estimated, and not provide enough benefits.
Raising the dam wall would also cause significant negative impacts on the important wetland environment that is downstream.
The Australian Government will continue to work with the New South Wales Government to support the water needs of the region.
