If successful, the proposed LED UV Disinfection unit has the potential to improve water quality for regional, remote and First Nations communities across Australia.

Project overview

The project seeks to use ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LED) disinfection technology to assess the removal of pathogenic species from contaminated ground and surface water. It aims to increase access to safe and reliable drinking water in remote and First Nations communities.

The project will develop a system using a LED UV Disinfection unit. The system will be suitable for use in remote communities which will be installed and trialled over a 12-month period. The study will focus on the effects of water flowrate, voltage, scaling and disinfection performance of the unit.

Research will compare the effectiveness of this unit against traditional UV disinfection units. The study will research:

  • reliability and repeatability of the unit under field conditions for an extended period
  • demonstrating economic, environmental and technical viability of the treatment with variable water qualities
  • engaging with First Nations communities to build on water knowledge.

If successful, the proposed LED UV Disinfection unit has the potential to improve water quality for regional, remote and First Nations communities across Australia.

The Western Australian Government is also contributing $20,000 through in-kind contributions*.
