The project is funded by the Australian Government ($1,300,000). Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The effects of climate change in Tasmania are predicted to impact catchment yields as well as the timing of water demand and reliability of water supply.
The project is being delivered in two phases, with phase 1 now complete:
- Phase 1: desktop assessment exploring contemporary projections of climate change and their application to water management to establish a pathway for updating hydrological estimates of catchment yields.
- Phase 2: generating new Tasmania-wide catchment yield estimates utilising updated climate projections. The benefits from phase 1 of the project will not be realised without the investment and resourcing to undertake phase 2, which is now underway.
This project is key to ensuring that water management and allocation decisions are future proofed and continue to provide for sustainable development, including the state’s freshwater sources.
Project outcomes will also help inform decisions about the capability and capacity of existing and proposed water infrastructure.
Through in-kind contributions*, the Tasmanian Government is contributing $480,000 and the Bureau of Meteorology is contributing $100,000.
*In-kind contributions are contributions of goods and services and do not contribute to the total project cost.
