The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($80,000) and the Western Australian Government ($60,000). Australian Government Funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The project will research the effectiveness of Continuous Electrochlorination (CEC) in disinfecting drinking water, compared with conventional chlorination systems. The project aims to address water quality issues faced by regional, remote and First Nations communities.
Research will include:
- reliability and repeatability of CEC under field conditions for an extended period
- demonstrating economic, environmental and technical viability of the treatment with variable water qualities
- engaging with First Nations communities to build on water knowledge.
Disinfection of drinking water is critical in providing safe water to regional and remote communities. Providing water to these communities can prove difficult due to location, which can mean:
- high transportation costs
- lack of trained and qualified staff
- delayed emergency response.
The project aims to provide a safer and more sustainable solution, based on the unique challenges faced by regional, remote, and First Nations communities.
The Western Australian Government is also contributing $92,000 through in-kind contributions*.
*In-kind contributions are contributions of goods and services and do not contribute to the total project cost.
