The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($190,000) and the Western Australian Government ($90,000). Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The project will test EcoVAP Evaporative Matrix panels which can increase the evaporation rate of reject water from desalination systems.
Increasing evaporation of reject water from desalination systems can minimise the environmental impact caused by brines and other waste streams from water treatment plants. The technology will be trialled at the Laverton Water Treatment Plant in regional Western Australia (WA). It will enable testing under a range of conditions to determine the suitability of the technology for dispersed small:
- communities
- industries
- enterprises
- farms.
The Laverton Water Treatment Plant in not able to increase its evaporation pond due to heritage factors. It also has an increasing waste volume due to increasing salinities. The project will construct a pilot-scale EcoVAP Evaporative Matrix within the existing evaporation pond.
The project will support water security for agriculture and regional communities.
The Western Australian Government is also contributing $100,000 through in-kind contributions*.
*In-kind contributions are contributions of goods and services and do not contribute to the total project cost.
