Funding
The project is being funded by the Australian Government ($800,000). Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The project will investigate water infrastructure options to support agricultural expansion in south-west Western Australia.
These options include:
- expansion of the existing Binningup desalination plant
- construction of a new 20 gigalitre capacity Wellington Dam desalination plant
- upgrade and extension of water networks
- establishment of managed aquifer recharge
- better utilisation of existing storages.
If fully constructed, the project would supply water to the proposed Myalup Primary Industries Reserve. This covers a proposed 500-hectare horticultural zone. The project could support up to 450 jobs.
The preliminary business case project will:
- review previously identified options
- undertake a preliminary assessment
- assess water demand
- undertake stakeholder engagement.
The preliminary business case is expected to be completed in 2024.
