Project overview

The project will investigate water infrastructure options to support agricultural expansion in south-west Western Australia.

These options include:

  • expansion of the existing Binningup desalination plant
  • construction of a new 20 gigalitre capacity Wellington Dam desalination plant
  • upgrade and extension of water networks
  • establishment of managed aquifer recharge
  • better utilisation of existing storages.

If fully constructed, the project would supply water to the proposed Myalup Primary Industries Reserve. This covers a proposed 500-hectare horticultural zone. The project could support up to 450 jobs.

The preliminary business case project will:

  • review previously identified options
  • undertake a preliminary assessment
  • assess water demand
  • undertake stakeholder engagement.

The preliminary business case is expected to be completed in 2024.
