The project is funded by the Australian Government ($3,000,000) and the Western Australian Government ($3,000,000). Australian Government Funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The Improving Water Quality in First Nations Communities – Chlorination of Water Supply – Phase 1 project will construct and install chlorinators in 10 remote First Nations communities in Western Australia to increase water quality. The chlorinators will replace existing UV disinfection systems that are not fit for purpose in these remote communities. Chlorinators provide better disinfection than UV systems in some situations, including where regular services do not happen often.
Each system will include:
- fencing
- pipework connections to the existing system
- supply and installation of the chlorinator
- remote system monitoring and control capabilities (SCADA).
Each of the communities receiving a chlorinator have historic records of microbiological contamination that include E.Coli or amoebae. This results in increased health risks to the community and requires the community to boil water before it is safe. This project supports the Australian Government’s commitment to Close the Gap on water security for First Nations communities.
