The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($24,927,696) and Aqwest ($24,927,696). Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The Greater Bunbury region is experiencing a drying climate which poses risks to the future sustainability of groundwater use for Bunbury’s drinking water supply. The region is projected to experience a significant decline in water security due to:
- declining rainfall
- population growth
- increasing industrial interest in the region.
The project will deliver an advanced recycled water treatment plant and supporting infrastructure, including a distribution network.
This project will enable wastewater to be recycled for use by the community and local industry. Up to 2 gigalitres (GL) of recycled water per year will be made available through this project.
It will benefit the region by:
- increasing climate change resilience
- greening public open spaces, contributing to community wellbeing
- supporting new industrial operations
- adding an alternative water source and reducing pressure on fully allocated groundwater resources.
