The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($1,500,000) and NSW Government ($1,500,000). Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund.
Project overview
The Bermagui town water supply system has been identified as having the greatest unaddressed water security risk in the South Coast region of NSW. The preliminary business case will explore infrastructure and non-infrastructure options to address water security and shortage issues.
Bermagui draws its town water supply directly from the Brogo River, with releases supplied by the regulated Brogo Dam. The preliminary business case will investigate:
- if changing the reserve set aside in Brogo Dam could improve the ability of Brogo Dam to deliver water to the Bermagui town water supply during extreme events
- weir pool volumes and whether a redesign of the existing inlet arrangement to the town water supply offtake and/or changing the location of the offtake would improve water security
- construction of a weir at the offtake site that would enable a sufficient depth of water during low-flow periods for the town water supply pumps to operate and assist managed releases from Brogo Dam.
Improved water security in Bermagui would promote regional development, economic growth and sustainability by addressing significant water security issues in the South Coast region.
