About the National Water Grid Authority

The National Water Grid Authority (NWGA) is the lead Australian Government agency responsible for investing in Australia’s next generation water infrastructure, but it is only one part of the Australian Government’s broader water agenda.

Our role in the Commonwealth

The NWGA forms part of the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The Department is responsible for delivering the Australian Government’s broader water agenda and improving the sustainable and nature positive management of Australia’s water supply for industry, the environment and communities.

We work closely with other Australian Government agencies and state and territory governments to ensure water infrastructure investment decisions support national objectives and deliver against a range of social, environment and economic outcomes. This includes more effective and efficient use of existing water supplies based on scientific evidence and business cases that stack up economically and environmentally.  

Our work is consistent with and supports the aims of the National Water Initiative and other water governance arrangements, including the Water Act 2007.
